The original 'Laughing Policeman' himself, Charles Jolly (stage name for C. Penrose) sings self-referentially.
After the success of ‘The Laughing Policeman’ in 1922, poor Penrose had to make ends meet with endless rewrites (and the tune wasn’t even an original – the song dates back to 1898). This one has the usual infectious chorus but a little more challenging in having a syncopated chorus which sounds rather natural. The story, however, is bunk, and makes you want to punch him.

Great blog! I compiled two CD's of "laughing songs" a few years back - mostly old 78's gleaned from the internet and car boot sales. This one wasnt on it though so thanks for that!
Thanks! Hey I'd love a copy or at least the tracklist of that CD you put together! I quite like that Okeh laughing record too, although I thought it a bit too well-known to put up here. Well - I mean well-known in certain circles, of course!
I have added some laughing songs to my blog Boot Sale Sounds and given you a plug. I will try and find both CD's and send them along.
