Amazingly, this stereo showcase compilation still sounds quite innovative. (Is anyone still doing stereo experimentation, or is it all 4.1. Surround Sound ?)
First up, Ritual Fire Dance. I love a bit of De Falla. I also love accordions, so this was a no-brainer. I'm not sure whether in the final analysis the accordion detracts from the fieriness, but its novelty value begs for inclusion here.
Ritual Fire Dance - Jack Emblow, accordion (1968)
The only other non-orchestral interpretation I've heard that even comes close is Alicia de Larrocha's.
Change of tone now.
Wheels - Norman Petty (1968)
This seems to be the version everyone knows. Actually, until I posted this I hadn't noticed that Petty is co-credited with writing it (with Richard Stephens and Jimmy Torres). I guess it's a piece of fluff, but to find out that it's a piece of fluff that once had a home means something to me.
