Whenever I see "Various Artists" on a record, I know there are going to be casualties.
But, to mix the metaphors a bit, if a fair few songs on this record misfire, you can't say it wasn't well-intentioned, as the back cover tells us (in a disconcertingly stern tone) that the LP was "Issued By The United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees". So, amidst all that misfiring (and the ensuing casualties), what of the artists who did hit the targets?
Ah, the ghosted melody. The song isn't too strong, but the production is simple and haunting.
First Star I See - Patti Page
I've obviously got a bit of a thing for Anne Shelton (Don't believe me? See here). This tune, however, is very slow and ethereal and less camp than the previous post.
Greensleeves - Anne Shelton
Don't suppose any Italian-speaking readers could tell me if it refers to gondolas or swallows? Until then, I shan't pretend I know what it's about, but I shall go on liking it in my ignorance.
Las Golondrin - Caterina Valente

La golondrina is the swallow. It is not Italian, but Spanish. The singer feels lost far away from home and wonders what may be the fate of the leaving swallow.
It might got lost, like I am lost in this region but, o heaven, I can not fly.
