A Highlight from Kenneth Clarke's Civilisation

I’ve mentioned Clark before, but I didn’t know he’d been put on YouTube yet, so now I can point you towards one of my favourite bits.

One of the most startling moments of Kenneth Clarke's Civilisation comes halfway through the first episode, where he examines a Viking longboat.

The sequence I am referring to begins at the three minute mark, with a collage of Pagan images. There’s Clark’s wonderful pronunciation of 'mythology' (my-thology) and this splendid moment, at 6:09, where the camera follows Clark’s hand tracing the lines of the ship. Everytime it gets me. It’s simultaneously beautiful and unintentionally hilarious (especially at 6:34). It is truly beyond verbal expression, so go and watch it and see what I mean.
