John Gielgud: Shakespeare’s The Ages of Man

The Ages of Man album was directly inspired by the success of Gielgud's Ages of Man tour, in which he - in the eyes of many of his contemporaries - showed how the language of Shakespeare should be spoken. (They were talking about meaning, not pronunciation.)

We listen now not so much for this or the putative journey (it's actually rather a rag-bag, a story Shakespeare would have told far better), but for the instrumental quality of Gielgud's voice, its recherché musicality.

01 - Youth
02 - Manhood
03 - Old Age

Can't thank you enough for reuniting me with this favourite recording of mine! Listening to it takes me back fifteen years, when I first picked up the LP for ten Rupees at a Delhi flea-market. It used to be a regular fixture on our stereo till about five years ago, when the turntable finally packed up. I've been cursing myself ever since for not transferring it to tape or CD in time. This is an absolute gem of a find. Do please keep up the good work!

Just another Music Makes Me happy ending!

I'm not sure what 10 rupees would be worth in pounds, but my posting it here certainly saves you having to get a new turntable.

Though I would get a new turntable anyway, just for the hell of it!

Thanks for commenting.

P.S. I like your blog - it seems to sum up my other two passions: "Offbeat Food and Travel Adventures".

Take care

Many thanks for this. I have my father's old LP, but the mp3s are wonderfully for loading on my 12-year-old's iPod!
